are telling all of their people in the south of israel, do what you're told. stay inside. stay inside the bomb shelters. there are many rocket attacks still coming from gaza into israel. israel is continuing to attack hamas targets inside gaza. at least 11 palestinians have been killed. there was a funeral this morning for the hamas leader who was killed yesterday. hamas leaders did not attend the funeral because they're afraid of being assassinated by israel. israel's aims are to target the hamas leaders as they killed the millitent leader of hamas and at the same time and in particular to take out hamas's rocket capability. that's almost as significant as the killing yesterday. they had great success in knocking out the long rage rockets that hamas has that threatened the central cities. the two sides on the edge of a war. we don't know how this is going to play out. >> that continues to play out this morning. martin fletcher, live from tel aviv. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here for a check of your weather center forecast. yesterday you said a lot about the storm you were tracking n

mind about the prospect of a war in the middle east as israel and palestinian militants get closer to the brink this weekend. israel expanding its air assault against hamas and palestinian militants continuing to fire rockets into civilian areas of southern israel. that's where i want to begin this morning. i've got nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell and "new york times" columnist tom friedman. who better to have to discuss this. tom, as the two sides get closer to the brink, based on your experience and reporting, where is this going? >> let's just go around the horn, david, quickly. i think hamas is trying to use this moment to both break out of the blockade and try to end targeted killing of its leaders from israel, and trying to take advantage of the new arab spring balance of power, the muslim brotherhood in egypt, to leverage that possibility. israel. israel has been watching for the last six to nine months hamas bringing in longer and longer range missiles from iran. i think they saw this as an opportunity of necessity to take those out, missiles that

and in israel perhaps that were hoping the president would broker a troop. that did not happen. shortly after he left there was an intensification of rocket fire, followed by rket fire from the israeli air force. and that certainly has exacerbated the situation here on the ground. meanwhile, palestinians are bracing themselves for yet another night of what is expected to be severe israeli bombardme bombardment. one thing we've been seeing time and time again is gaza is densely populated. even when israel tries to carry out precision strikes as it claims, it ends up affecting the civilian population who bears a bankrupt of the air strikes. so people are very much concerned that in the coming days, the situation could worsen. they say that the fact that israel has amass eed thousands soldiers on this territory is an ominous sign a ground invasion is imminent. supplies are dwindling for the population as gaza is still a territory very much under siege. it's difficult to get basic supplies in and out. nbc news, gaza. >>> "nbc nightly news" with brian williams will have more on the escalating violenc
